So why a program dedicated to online platform building? Well, let me start with an explanation on what an online platform is. Online platforms have become the new media companies and really are at the forefront of the changing economic world we live in today. Online platforms have disrupted the institutions and industries at really every corner of the market. Think about Airbnb, Uber, Instagram, and Amazon. They are all extremely successful online platforms and they have amassed huge fortunes, not by making things, but by connecting people with products, services, and information.
But online platforms are more than media companies for millions of users. A platform is a stage that gives you and your message leverage and visibility. It’s really a shining light on your work. It helps you scale your reach and connect your work to the right people. For many artists, building a platform was essential to the funding of their work. If you were a musician, it was a recording deal. If you were an author, it was a book contract. If you were an entrepreneur, it was a connection with a venture capitalist.
Today, it’s not just the artist or the entrepreneur that needs a platform. According to Jeff Goings, in his book Art Of Work, he writes, “Whatever you want to do in the world, you need influence to make your voice count.” A platform amplifies and legitimizes your message. It gives you authority to influence.
Now, it’s not just large brands and companies that have built profitable platforms, individuals like Amy Porterfield, Debbie Bernstein, Michael Hyatt, Pat Flynn, Brian Clark, and Joe Pulizzi have all launched seven-figure platforms that connect people to content and a community. These platforms are more than just online businesses, they’re online destinations similar to a media property like a magazine or a television program. Again, they all create content that attracts an audience and then they monetize that audience. I’m not talking about advertising. Of course, advertising is one monetization tactic, but it’s likely the most challenging for any individual. It takes a lot of eyeballs, I mean millions of eyeballs to attract advertisers. It’s not impossible, but there are hundreds of ways to monetize an online platform and this podcast, Platform FM, will help you discover those ways and let you hear from successful online platform builders.
So, now you have a better idea what an online platform is and maybe why you need one, but you may be wondering who I am and what authority do I have to host a podcast about platforms? Well, I’ve spent my entire career working for and with some of the largest media companies in the world. But before there was internet, mobile phones, or social media I co-founded a nationally syndicated talk radio program called Family Matters Radio. Now, that program aired across the country for 12 years and was honored by several journalism awards. In early 2004 we began to explore online platform distribution and we launched FMR as a podcast and syndicated the program with some of the largest websites in the country. At one time, Family Matters Radio had a listening audience of over a million people.
In order to get Family Matters content connected with an audience, boy, we went through a lot. We pitched program directors, sponsors, syndicators, general managers, and publishers. We needed a yes from all of them. It was a hard fought and long journey, but thankfully times and technology have evolved, and connecting with an audience today has become much easier. Today, launching a media property or program via an online platform has never been more assessable to anyone who dreams of being in control of their own destiny and reaching an audience through content.
So, on this show and online I’m opening up my network of media and digital influencers to share their expertise and how you can use online marketing techniques and simple, but really powerful media strategies to launch, grow, and monetize your platform. But I want you to hear more than just a collection of tips. We’ll share stories of encouragement and inspiration so you can replace doubt with conviction to create your platform. I believe that online platform is essential for today’s authors, entrepreneurs, and influencers, but I don’t believe it’s reserved for well-funded startups and established entrepreneurs.
On Platform FM, you’ll find the information you need to build, launch, and grow an online platform that is authoritative, authentic, and seriously awesome.
