I’m so excited to welcome you here. I created the Online Platform Institute because I wanted to create an interactive, supportive and informational resource on launching and growing an online platform. Online platforms have become the new media companies and are at the forefront of the changing economic world we live in today. Online platforms have disrupted the institutions and industries at every corner of the market. Think about Airbnb, Uber, Instagram, and Amazon. They are all extremely successful online platforms, amassing huge fortunes not by making things but by connecting people with products, services, and information.
It’s not just large brands and companies that have built profitable platforms, individuals like Amy Porterfield, Gabby Bernstein, Michael Hyatt, Pat Flynn, Brian Clark and Joe Pulizzi have all launched 7-figure platforms that connect people to content and community. These platforms are more than online businesses, they are online destinations that are similar to a media property like a magazine or a television station. They all create content that attracts an audience and then they monetize that audience.
I have spent my entire career working for and with some of the largest media companies in the world including Gannett, NBC-TV, and Advance Local. On my first entrepreneurial endeavor, I co-founded a nationally syndicated talk radio program called Family Matters Radio (FMR.) The program aired across the country for twelve years and was honored by several journalism awards. In early 2004, we began distributing FMR as a podcast and syndicated the program with some of the largest websites in the country like Divine Caroline.
Every media company I worked with or created, whether it was television, radio, newspapers or online media properties, all shared a common business model – build an audience with content and monetize the content connection to the audience. This business model has worked for media companies over the last 200 years and is embedded in the goals and strategies of every function of the media company. They also were built with billions of dollars and years of infrastructure investment. Becoming a media mogul by launching a media property meant you had the power of money and influence to reach an audience and then leverage that reach to build your business empire.
